The EPA reports over 150 cleaning products have been linked to increased
allergies, birth defects and cancer. Consumers are exposed to countless
chemical ingredients that may be harmful to our health – they are too
numerousto identify, but some general categories should be avoided.

Pesticides: A counter-intuitive health threat includes disinfectants – they are pesticides and often include carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. Once ingested, they are difficult to eliminate from the body.

APEs: Found in detergents, disinfectants, all-purpose cleaners and laundry cleansers and are endocrine disruptors.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Emitted as gases, present in perfumes, air fresheners, disinfectants and deodorizers. Commonly include propane, butane, ethanol, phthalates and/or formaldehyde. Poses a variety of human health hazards and thought to be reproductive toxins and carcinogens.

Formaldehyde: Commonly known as a preservative, it is also a germicide, bactericide, fungicide and carcinogen. Found in household cleaners and disinfectants and also present in nail polish.

Phthalates: Commonly used in the manufacture of plastics, also used in perfumes, air fresheners and moisturizers. Endocrine disruptors and suspected carinogens. Also known to cause hormonal abnormalities, thyroid disorders, birth defects and reproductive problems.

Styrene: Found in floor waxes, polishes and metal cleaners. A known carcinogen and endocrine disruptor, exposure may affect the central nervous, liver and reproductive systems.
